Development programme for women in Heeley and Central Consituency Labour Parties

We are funding a development programme aimed at women to encourage participation at all levels in the Party to help address underrepresentation. Any woman can apply but in particular we welcome applications from young women, BAME women, women with a disability and women who feel there are barriers in place which makes them feel they cannot participate - maybe not having gone on to further or higher education, caring responsiblities or a lack of confidence that you can do it.

Real Clear are going to deliver the programme and set out below is a letter from them which gives more detail and tells you how to apply.

Letter from Real Clear:

Dear Colleague,

An Exciting Opportunity for Women Members in Heeley and Central

We are delighted to have teamed up with Sheffield Heeley and Sheffield Central Constituencies to create a Personal Training and Development Programme with a difference.  The aim of the programme is to encourage more people to get involved with our party and our community. Perhaps by getting more involved in your local branch, perhaps in a community organisation, perhaps as a councillor or an MP.

What makes this different?

Us.

A little bit of that difference is about us as training providers. Real Clear www.realclear.co.uk was set up by 3 Labour Party members – I am a member of Sheffield Heeley CLP - to help our people to develop the skills and confidence to do their jobs even better, to take on new challenges and to change their bit of the world.

You.

Most of the difference in this development programme however is you. The programme is aimed at people who wouldn’t normally think of themselves as a future branch or CLP officer or a councillor. We want to hear from people who probably haven’t stood for election. Perhaps they lack the confidence, perhaps they think “I could never do that” or that it isn’t for people like them.

We have worked with Labour MPs and councillors across the country and we think that the best representatives, particularly councillors, know how to listen, have lots of empathy and can get along with people. They know their own mind but are ok with knowing that not everyone will agree with them. If that sounds like you then we would love to hear from you. You might be surprised at what you can do.

The Programme

The programme, which spans over several months, consists of 6 Saturday morning training sessions beginning on June 23rd 2018. These will be supported by coaching and by you as a network of people on the programme. The training will cover things like:

  • Managing Challenging Behaviour
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Leadership skills
  • Effective communication
  • Self-confidence and resilience
  • Understanding different personalities
  • Decision making
  • Public speaking

If you check out our website you will see that people really enjoy our training. We try to have a lot of fun. Really helpful people like Councillor Olivia Blake will be helping us by explaining how councils work and Louise Haigh MP will be coming along too!

Louise Haigh commented “Women from a wide range of backgrounds and skills continue to be underrepresented at all levels of our democracy and we know that greater diversity equates to better decision making. Programmes like this are so important in encouraging women to come forward and in empowering them to get involved”.

You don’t have to commit to become a councillor, or an MP, or even the assistant minutes officer in your ward. You just have to come along. And bring a pen. The programme will run over six sessions, on the following dates:

  1. 23 June
  2. 7 July
  3. 1 September
  4. 13 October
  5. 10 November
  6. 8 December

Venue: GMB offices in Sheffield all of which are fully accessable. Specific venues will be confirmed for each session.

Time: 9am to 12.30pm

To be eligible to apply, it’s important that you’re able to commit to at least four of these dates.

What next?: If you would like any more information please feel free to get in touch.

If you are interested in applying to join the programme please email the information below to me at lisa@realclear.co.uk.

  • Name:
  • Email address:
  • Why you’d like to apply for the course:
  • Which dates you can commit to:
  • Useful information about you (please share anything that is useful for us to know, this could include how you are involved with the Labour Party, disabilities/learning needs, family and career background – the more information you give us the better!)

The closing date for applications is the 7th June 2018 at 12.00pm.  You will be informed early the next week if you have been allocated a place.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Kind regards,

Lisa
